How to sew your own sheep's wool pillow - step by step
Filling a pillow with sheep's wool is hardly different from making a “normal” pillow. The only difference is the filling. You will need the following tools and materials:
- Sewing machine (theoretically you can also sew by hand)
- Fabric of your choice (we recommend untreated cotton) in the desired dimensions of your pillow
- 1 kg sheep wool
- Tape measure/ Folding rule
- Scissors
- sewing thread
- pins
- Marker for marking
- A zipper of the right size
Step 1: Buy sheep wool
There are many sources where you can buy sheep online (or offline). The devil is in the details. First of all, it is very important that you buy natural, untreated sheep's wool . It can be combed or washed, but if it has been chemically treated, you should steer clear. After all, do you want to be exposed to potentially harmful chemicals every day when you sleep?
But also pay attention to the origin. Choose good quality sheep's wool - for example from Merino sheep or similar. Also make sure that you buy wool from free-roaming sheep. This is significantly better - and often cleaner, as sheep in cramped conditions can soil their own wool with feces.
Don't buy too much wool, less than 1 kg is enough for a normal pillow. If there is too much, you can use the wool as fertilizer.
Alternatively, you can also use processed sheep's wool balls. If you shake the wool well and distribute it evenly, you should be able to do without it.
Step 2: Sew the pillow
For the following pillow we show how to make it with a zipper. A so-called hotel closure is not recommended, otherwise the wool would fall out.
1. Calculate the material size
Determine the length and width of the pillow (e.g. 40 × 40 cm). Double the length so you can fold the fabric and have one less side to sew. So we have a length of 80 cm and a width of 40 cm. Add 2 to 3 cm on each side for the hem, for a total width of 44 to 46 cm.
The fabric has two sides. The nice side should be the outside, the other side the inside, where the seams will be hidden later.
2. Prepare the fabric edges
Spread the fabric out in front of you with the nice side facing down and the inside facing you. Fold the fabric on the short sides on the right and left twice inwards (2 to 3 cm) and pin it in place. Sew the folded edges together to form a hem using the sewing machine.
3. Attach the zipper
Place the zipper with the clasp facing down on the raw bottom edge. Make sure the edge of the zipper is flush with the edge of the fabric and pin the zipper in place. Then it is sewn to one edge. A zipper foot can help with this.
Repeat the process with the second raw edge - make sure the nice side of the fabric is facing in.
4. Fold the fabric
Then the top of the fabric is folded onto the undersideso that the outsides face each other and the two hems face outwards. Pin the edges with pins.
5. Prepare the seam
Now draw a seam allowance on both sides left and right. This means that you do not mark on the hem, but 2 to 3 cm further inside. When you turn the cushion over, you won't be able to see the seam from the outside. Here too, pin the line with pins.
6. Finalize the cushion
Sew the two side edges together with the sewing machine, staying on the line, 2 to 3 cm from the edge. Then turn the cover over so that the nice side is facing outwards. The pillowcase is ready!
Step 3: Fill the pillow
Take your sheep's wool and gently fluff it up with your fingers. Open the zipper and fill the wool loosely and evenly into the pillow. Your sheep's wool pillow is ready! You can add some dried lavender if you don't mind the smell.
If you want to wash the pillow, just take out the wool and wash the bare pillowcase.Have fun with the pillow!

FAQ
What other materials can I fill pillows with - apart from sheep's wool?
Theoretically, there are other options such as down, polyester, etc. But sheep's wool is unsurpassed as a pillow filling. Unlike down, wool is obtained without cruelty to animals and is breathable and moisture-absorbing. While you sleep, the moisture is absorbed and you don't sweat. Choose sheep's wool!
How can I care for my sheep's wool pillow?
Caring for a sheep's wool pillow is easy - air and fluff it regularly. The pillow should only be washed if the wool has been removed beforehand, otherwise it can clump together.
